Introduction
This article will share with
you the right brain educational theory about teaching practices of Dr. Makoto Shichida of Japan,
which he has developed over the past several decades. Working with many Japanese teachers,
he has found that a specific program of visual training gives very young children the ability to
do rapid fire math calculations, speed read, memorize vast quantities of information, learn foreign
languages and increase intuitive abilities. He hypothesizes these discovered abilities lie dormant
in all children, and are mostly housed in the right hemisphere of the brain.
Since the discovery in 1960 by
Dr. Roger Sperry of the different right about left brain functions, there has been much speculation,
discussion, research and general interest in how the two sides of the brain function both differently
and cooperatively. A recently published college textbook in human development tells us
that the left hemisphere of the brain controls right hand touch, speech, language, writing, logic,
science and math, and that the right hemisphere of the brain controls left hand touch, spatial
construction, creative thinking, fantasy, musce appreciation, and art appreciation (Rice,
1997). The brain studies of recent years have indeed confirmed that there are mental functions unique
to one side or the other, but also that both sides work together in various ways in
hemispheric synchronization.
Five Functions of the Right
Brain
According to Dr. Shichida, the
right brain has five functions.
(1)Automatic Process Function
(2)Image Visualization Function
(3) Rapid Mass Memorization Function
(4) High speed automatic process
function The high speed mass memorization function and the high
speed automatic process function
work hand in hand.
(5) ESP Functions.
