Learning Through the Multiple Intelligences
by Bruce & Linda Campbell

Three eight and nine year old boys recently gave an oral report about California to their classmates. The students sang and danced an original song about the state, played a short video they produced, displayed maps drawn to scale and spiritedly presented a series of facts. Are these students academically advanced or exceptionally creative? No, such multi-modal learning is commonplace in a third-fourth-fifth grade
multi-aged classroom at Cascade Elementary School in Maryville, WA.

Inspired by Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences, this classroom features seven learning centers, each devoted to one of the intelligences identified by Gardner. The students spend approximately two thirds of their day rotating through the various stations. The morning begins with a brief lecture and discussion of the classroom's current theme. Students then divide into groups of approximately four children each to begin center work. The class spends 20 to 30 minutes at each center, learning about the day's
topic through all the intelligences.
